I know this may sound a little unusual, but I want to share something with all of you other business owners out there. One reason that my productivity has increased dramatically lately is that I got rid of my office chair. I’ve joined the ranks of people who are using an Ergotron Workstation. It’s improved my fitness and energy levels so much that I’ll probably wind up donating my desk chair to a worthy cause.
Last July 10, I attended a Wellness Summit where I learned a lot about Sitting Disease. By that point, I’d already had my Workstation for a few months but I wanted to educate myself about its health benefits. One statistic shared by the experts really stood out:
A 2010 American Cancer Society study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that 94 percent of women and 48 percent of men who sat more and were less physically active were more likely to die than those who reported sitting the least and being most active.
Here are some other stats I found interesting (information from JustStand.org):
• Most of us spend 7.7 hours (55% of our awake time) a day sitting
• A January 2010 British Journal of Sports Medicine suggests that people who sit for long periods of time have an increased risk for disease.
• Three out of four full-time employees of large companies wish they didn’t spend most of their working hours sitting
• 67 percent of U.S. office workers wish their employers offered them desks that could be adjusted so they could work either seated or standing
Medical experts have started referring to long periods of physical inactivity and its negative consequences as “sitting disease”. The remedy is simple. Since I’ve started standing more at work, my muscles are more toned and my posture has improved. Experts say standing more also increases my blood flow and ramps up metabolism to burn more calories.
