The Blogger’s Guide to the Galaxy Part Three: The Blog Post at the End of the Universe

by | May 28, 2010 | Advice & Tips

Now that you have the structure and the content of your blog posts figured out, you now need to get people to read it. You need to quickly build an audience to ensure your blog stands out and doesn’t become The Blog Post at the End of the Universe.

Create links on your post
Google won’t tell us exactly how its logarithms determines search rank. However, it has given a little clue about how to increase your ranking. Linking to high-quality sites can improve your ranking. A word of warning. Google has warned us not to participate in link scams or be a “web spammer”.

Share shows you care
You may be asking yourself one of the great philosophical questions of the day. “If I want people to link to my site so I can be found on Google, how will they find me in the first place?” This part requires you to be proactive. Find credible blogs that have a topic similar to yours, and post a comment. Make your remarks honest and non-commercial, and put a link to your blog. You can also create a dialog with other bloggers and ask them to do a link exchange with you. It never hurts to ask.

Syndication

Create the opportunity for people to follow your posts through an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed. Invite people to subscribe and be automatically fed your posts via their aggregate or browser. This information can be fed directly to your Facebook page and Twitter feed, meaning you won’t have to post that information yourself.

Update often
Post frequently. Google also likes to feature blogs that have fresh content. The newer the content, the better your ranking will be.

Be social

It’s important to build a social media platform to complement your company and your blog. Facebook is the online marketing equivalent to manna from heaven. People come to you and read your materials, and have the ability to share it with their friends. Twitter also is emerging as a platform in which people gather marketing information. A recent survey cited that 42 percent of people on Twitter use it to learn about new products. Social media marketing is becoming a powerful tool that future blog posts will explore at great length.

Can you Digg it?
Pushing content to a social news website such as Digg and Delicious can help you gain a new audience. They list stories and let people vote on them. If you get enough good votes, your story’s ranking will raise, increasing the odds that more people will see it.
