LinkedIn PR strategies

by | Sep 13, 2011 | Advice & Tips

Over the past 20+ years, we’ve developed one of the PR industry’s most comprehensive, proprietary lists of media contacts. We pick up the phone and call producers, editors and reporters whenever we’ve got a story to pitch – which is thousands of times each week.

Now that most of us are also getting our news online, marketing pros are on the lookout for strategies to reach both the media and their target audiences via social media. As with most companies, you probably need a comprehensive approach to managing your information flow via LinkedIn.

We do this kind of stuff every day of the week. So if you need some help with anything from content to media pitching to developing a social media marketing campaign, give us a call at 952-697-5269.

The majority of journalists now actively use LinkedIn more than any other social network. This gives marketing execs as well as small- or mid-sized business owners a huge opportunity to capture the media’s attention through this form of social media. Here are some tips for making the most of this opportunity.

  • Use all of the tools available to position yourself as an industry leader. Feature your videos, places where you’ve been published, your industry experience and your previous media appearances. Be sure to pull it all together in a great summary that makes it easy to get to know you. There are templates available to help you create an effective media-friendly LinkedIn profile.
  • Create a LinkedIn group where you can share your own content and information. “This gives the media a chance to see the type of content you can provide to their audiences. Plus it makes prospects more comfortable by giving them a sneak peak into your expertise.
  • Go ahead! Invite media professionals who report on subjects in your industry to connect with you on LinkedIn.
  • Thank the journalist publicly within your community each time a story runs. This helps you to create an ongoing relationship with him/her.
  • Mix your article marketing, video marketing, traditional PR and LinkedIn marketing efforts to get even more exposure for the publicity you generate.

Our publicists have great instincts because they all have media backgrounds. When things get hectic, it’s often Heather who cracks the first joke. “We encourage people to be a little goofy and unique. Some of the best ideas and solutions emerge because we know how to have fun,” she grins. “I may say something like, “Remember this is PR not the ER. Now, lighten up and go book a great story idea with the media!”
